The Nitrocellulose Production Challenge

According to Espreso.tv: A scarcity of cotton is creating serious difficulties for NATO countries in manufacturing nitrocellulose, a critical ingredient in smokeless gunpowder. The problem stems from the fact that nitrocellulose relies on linters—short fibers from cotton seeds—as its raw material. To address this, Europe must dramatically increase its annual nitrocellulose output to over 20,000 metric tons, ensuring more resilient supply chains for the Alliance.

Steps Being Taken to Tackle the Issue

In response, Germany's Rheinmetall is converting civilian nitrocellulose production lines to serve military needs. Meanwhile, Poland is preparing to build a new plant, which will further boost output of this essential material. At the same time, the Ministry of Defense is developing a new class of guided munitions called Firefly, a move that could significantly enhance defensive capabilities. Additionally, the Omega Special Purpose Center has announced the creation of its first naval drone.

These efforts show that NATO member states are actively working to improve their production capacities in the face of raw material constraints.
