According to The Sun: Naufal Takdir Al Bari, an Indonesian gymnast, passed away last week at just 19 years old due to a tragic accident during training.
The young man, who dreamed of participating in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, died after 12 days in intensive care.
AFPThe fatal incident occurred during a national team training camp in Penza, Russia, where he sustained serious injuries while attempting to execute a complex move on the horizontal bar.
As Naufal fell into a soft pit, he likely injured his neck.
Despite the medical assistance provided, the Indonesian Gymnastics Federation (IGF) announced his death.
“Athlete Naufal Takdir Al Bari has passed away to the mercy of Allah in Penza, Russia. The 19-year-old gymnast breathed his last after undergoing intensive care for 12 days at GA Zakharyin Hospital.”
The statement noted that Naufal was a gifted athlete, and his loss is a significant blow to the sports world, especially for the IGF.
“Indonesian Gymnastics has lost the nation’s best. This is a deep blow and sorrow for us. May the family be given strength.”
Vasily Titov, the president of the Russian Gymnastics Federation, stated that their organization conducted an investigation into this tragedy.
“We conducted the necessary investigation, and all the circumstances surrounding the injury have been established. Unfortunately, the athlete was not prepared to perform such a complex element.”
Titov also confirmed that they are ready to assist with the transportation and repatriation of the body.
The head of Indonesian gymnastics, Ita Yuliati, noted:
“[Al Bari] was a talented young athlete and a good person. Indonesian gymnastics has lost one of the nation’s finest sons. This is a deep blow and sorrow for us. May the family be given strength.”
