In the UK, 2.9 million people receive assistance due to health conditions: what is known.
Increase in the number of Universal Credit recipients
According to The Sun: According to the latest data, about three million people receive Universal Credit due to health problems. This is significantly more than 2.1 million last year.
Over the year to June, 2.9 million people received social assistance due to illness or disability.
PAResponse from the Minister of Social Protection
The Minister of Social Protection, Pat McFadden, expressed serious concern that too many people remain "forgotten." He emphasized:
“Too many people have been left without support and the prospect of moving from inactivity into work.”
McFadden also noted that the government is shifting focus from “welfare to employment, skills, and opportunities,” and that new measures will help people with disabilities find “decent, stable jobs.”
Progress and challenges
This situation is developing against the backdrop of an increase in the number of young people aged 16 to 24 who are not engaged in education, employment, or training. Currently, their number stands at 948,000, which is more than 923,000 last year. Lord Blunkett described this as
“a social and economic catastrophe.”id='6375688531112' data-video-id='6375688531112' data-account='5067014667001' data-player='default' data-usage='cms:WordPress:6.5.6:2.8.6:javascript' data-embed='default' class='video-js' data-application-id='' controls style='width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; top: 0; bottom: 0; right: 0; left: 0;'>
The rise in the number of Universal Credit recipients indicates serious social issues in society related to access to work and support for people facing difficulties due to illness. The situation with young people who are not participating in education or the labor market is also concerning and requires urgent government action.
Such issues again highlight the necessity for changes in the social security system and support for the unemployed, which could become a decisive factor for the country's future.
