Ukraine’s Spring Fishing Ban Starts April 1: Key Dates and Regional Rules.
Annual Fishing Restrictions During Spawning Season in Ukraine
According to Novyny.live: Starting April 1, 2024, Ukraine enforces a two-month fishing ban to protect fish during their spawning period. The exact duration of these restrictions depends on the type of water body, with specific end dates for rivers, reservoirs, and other waters. This measure is critical for preserving fish populations and maintaining ecological balance, especially as climate change and human activity put increasing pressure on aquatic ecosystems.
How Long the Ban Lasts Across Different Waters
For rivers, the ban remains in effect until May 20. During this time, anglers are prohibited from fishing in rivers, allowing fish to spawn undisturbed. In reservoirs, the restriction runs from April 1 through June 10, also barring the use of fishing gear. Additionally, the ban applies to smaller tributaries and connected waters, where it continues until June 30.
In the Zakarpattia region, the fishing ban starts earlier—on March 25—giving extra time for fish stock protection in that area. Furthermore, a separate ban on catching crayfish will last until June 30, 2026, a long-term measure aimed at helping crayfish populations recover.
These seasonal restrictions are designed to support sustainable fishing and restore fish stocks, which are vital both for the environment and for fishing communities. By safeguarding biodiversity and water resources, such regulations help ensure the long-term health of Ukraine’s aquatic ecosystems.
