Expert Analyzes Russia’s June 2 Night Attack: Key Enemy Strategy and Defense Gaps Revealed.
Russia’s Assault on Ukraine on June 2, 2023
According to Espreso.tv: On the night of June 2, 2023, Russia launched a large-scale attack against Ukraine, firing over 70 missiles. Aviation expert Bohdan Dolintse assessed the operation, highlighting the extensive use of ballistic missiles and drones. Of the 73 missiles deployed, 41 were ballistic—a clear indication that Moscow’s primary focus in this strike was on ballistic weaponry.

Dolintse also noted that Russia likely possesses between 700 and 900 ballistic and aeroballistic missiles of various types. Over recent years, the Russian military has accumulated a certain stockpile of Zircon missiles. However, the interception rate during this attack was less than 50%. Dolintse emphasized:
“The June 2 attack involved a substantial number of missiles—more than 70. Unfortunately, the interception rate was below 50%.” — Bohdan Dolintse
The expert also pointed to the continued use of long-range drones by Russian forces, stating that “the number of long-range drones used by the enemy remains quite significant.” For context, Lockheed Martin’s monthly production capacity for PAC-3 missiles is around 60 units. These factors underscore the persistent threat Russia poses to Ukraine, particularly through the application of advanced military technologies.
The June 2 assault serves as further evidence of escalating Russian military activity in the region, reinforcing the urgent need to bolster Ukraine’s defensive capabilities. The low interception rate highlights critical gaps in air defense systems that must be addressed to mitigate the impact of future strikes. Moreover, the heavy reliance on drones signals a shift in battlefield tactics, requiring Ukrainian forces to continuously adapt to emerging threats.
