Germany extends temporary protection for refugees from Ukraine.
Ukrainian refugees in Germany received an automatic extension of their status until 2025. The Federal Council made this decision to avoid overloading immigration authorities. At the beginning of 2023, European countries agreed on this same initiative.
German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser stated that Ukrainian refugees who sought refuge from the war would remain safe in Germany. They will have the chance to receive education and find employment. The state extended the protection status until 2025 to avoid unnecessary troubles for the refugees.
Security and support for Ukraine are priorities for Germany. This automatic extension of refugee status will save about 10 million euros of state funds.
Currently, about 1.1 million Ukrainian refugees reside in Germany who arrived during the Russian aggression. Among them, 350,000 are children and young people under 18 years old. Women make up more than two-thirds of the adult refugees.
It is also worth noting that draft-age individuals from Ukraine officially reside in Germany. They arrived after the Russian aggression, but some have already left Germany.
Ukrainian refugees are also present in many other European countries. The UN recorded 5.9 million Ukrainian refugees in need of temporary protection. However, some countries plan to reduce assistance to refugees and tighten housing conditions to encourage them to seek employment.
