Norwegian PM Calls on Beijing to Intervene

According to Espreso.tv: During a meeting in Oslo with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre called on China to use its unique access to Russian leadership to help end the war in Ukraine. Støre emphasized that Beijing likely holds the most direct line to Moscow and urged it to actively deploy this channel to push for a peaceful resolution. This appeal reflects growing international pressure on China to take a more active diplomatic role in the conflict.

Ukraine-Russia Negotiations: A Stalled Process

Negotiations between Ukraine and Russia are ongoing but have yet to yield a compromise. On May 11, 2025, Vladimir Putin proposed restarting direct talks between the two countries in Istanbul with no preconditions. The first direct negotiations in three years took place in that city on May 16, 2025. However, during the second round on June 2, 2025, the sides exchanged draft memorandums but failed to reach an agreement.

A third round of talks in Istanbul on July 23, 2025, also ended with key differences unresolved. In light of these developments, the Norwegian prime minister's call could mark an important step toward revitalizing diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.

Støre's appeal to China highlights the country's growing role in global geopolitics, especially regarding the war in Ukraine. The strategic partnership between China and Russia has long been significant, and a more active diplomatic push from Beijing could become a key factor in the search for peace. The appeal also signals increasing international attention on the conflict and the need to bring new players into the peace process.
