Reason for Sam Meizer in the first team

According to The Sun: Manchester United invited young player Sam Meizer to first team training due to Nussair Mazraui's fitness issues.

Mazraui and his defensive colleague Lisandro Martinez were the only senior players not featured in the videos and images released by the club during midweek training.

Mazraui's absence opened up an opportunity for Meizer to work with the first squad. Coach Ruben Amorim will provide an update on Mazraui's health on Friday.

Martinez's rehabilitation

Martinez is still rehabilitating after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament during the match against Crystal Palace on February 2, training individually.

Mazraui recently returned from injury in the match against Burnley and played in both of United's last Premier League matches against Manchester City and Chelsea.

Sam, aged 21, was part of the team that won the Youth League Cup last year but has not yet made it into the first team matchday squad.

Meizer's prospects

Previously, Sam played on loan at Rochdale in the National League and then moved to Tranmere Rovers in League Two, where he spent only four minutes.

His versatility allowed him to take a free spot on the right wing in Mazraui's absence. The young promising player was not included in United U21's squad for the International League Cup match against Athletic Bilbao.

Erik ten Hag's agent, Kees Vos, signed Meizer to his SEG International agency in May 2024. Sam was included in last year's final preseason squad and came on as a substitute in the match against Liverpool, where the team lost 3-0.
