Ukraine, U.S., and Russia to Resume Negotiations

According to TSN.ua: A new round of peace talks involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia is being prepared and could take place by the end of February. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has emphasized his readiness to make compromises, provided certain conditions are met. He stressed that a direct meeting of leaders is critical for achieving a breakthrough.

"We expect that very soon, in February, it will be possible to organize another round of negotiations and that this round could indeed be productive," said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The Regional Context

A trilateral meeting in Geneva was held on February 17-18, where key aspects of conflict resolution were discussed. U.S. President Donald Trump noted that his administration had already helped end eight international conflicts but considers the Ukrainian issue the most difficult to resolve.

"I think this is the ninth one. It turned out to be the toughest," stated Donald Trump.

Experts point out that the Kremlin shows no intention of ending the war. The Russian military continues to prepare for a potential conflict with NATO. Against this backdrop, food prices in Russia have risen by 25%, a factor that could also impact the socio-economic situation in the region and influence Moscow's negotiating posture.

Zelenskyy highlighted the importance of progress in the humanitarian sphere and prisoner exchanges, which are priority issues in the talks. "That is precisely why our compromise is that we are talking to the aggressor about compromises," he added. Meanwhile, presidential advisor Dmytro Lytvyn assured that there has been no discussion among advisors about a negative negotiation scenario, nor any directive to plan for "three more years of war."

The reasons behind Trump's pressure on Zelenskyy are reported to include:

  • A desire to maintain Vladimir Putin as a geopolitical partner;
  • A need for a quick foreign policy victory for American voters.

This reveals the complex dynamics between the states and underscores the necessity of continued diplomatic efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution. The upcoming talks reflect a tense geopolitical landscape where key players are attempting to find a compromise to end the conflict, even as Russian actions suggest a risk of escalation that could complicate the peace process.
