From October 12, entry to the EU will change: what awaits Ukrainians at the border

Changes for Ukrainians who frequently cross the border with EU countries introduce new requirements that will come into effect this autumn. On July 7, the European Parliament adopted the implementation of the EES system, which will start on October 12.

The introduction of the EES system involves the collection of biometric data from Ukrainians crossing the European Union and Schengen zone borders. New requirements include providing fingerprints, a facial photograph, and a passport for registration in the system. This will help strengthen the fight against illegal migration and enhance security in the EU.

What the EES system is and how it works

The Entry/Exit System is designed to monitor flows of people at the borders of EU and Schengen zone countries. Instead of stamps in the passport, biometric data will now be collected. Ukrainians will need to verify their identity using fingerprints and a facial photograph.

What the ETIAS system is and when it will become operational

Another new initiative is the ETIAS system, which will require additional control and will come into effect no earlier than 2026. The entry permit to the EU will cost 7 euros and will be valid for three years. For citizens of non-EU countries, this document is mandatory, even if they enjoy a visa-free regime.

Ukrainians intending to travel to European Union countries will need to verify their identity by submitting biometric data starting from October 12 of this year. These new requirements are aimed at improving border security and combating illegal migration. It is also worth noting that the introduction of the EES system is taking place in parallel with another initiative - the ETIAS system, which is set to begin operations no earlier than 2026.
