Semi-Transparent Solar Cells for Windows

According to ITC.ua — Техно: Researchers at University College London have unveiled a new type of semi-transparent solar cell designed for window installation. This cutting-edge technology enables buildings to produce electricity even in darkness or overcast conditions, greatly expanding the potential applications of solar energy.

Currently, these new cells allow 30% of sunlight to pass through, whereas standard windows transmit 80% to 90% of light. This is achieved using a 185 nm-thick layer of perovskite—significantly thinner than the 3–4 times thicker layers found in traditional solar cells. Notably, these cells convert 22% of bright indoor light (1000 lux) into electricity and achieve 14% efficiency under sunlight. Demonstrating strong durability, the device retained 80% of its performance after 300 hours of continuous light exposure.

Technology’s Potential and Future Outlook

Researcher Mojtaba Abdi-Jalebi commented:

“Our study shows it is possible to maintain window transparency while achieving efficient solar power generation.”
The team plans to continue advancing this technology, with the next goal being the development of flexible solar cells.

This innovation aims to turn buildings into energy generators, opening up new possibilities for energy independence. Additionally, future versions are expected to be easy to install, encouraging widespread adoption.
