5G Goes Live in Kyiv

According to Espreso.tv: The rollout of 5G in Kyiv is being driven by Ukraine's Ministry of Digital Transformation. The technology has already been successfully tested in cities such as Lviv, Kharkiv, and Borodianka. Following the activation in Kyiv, plans are in place to extend the network to Odesa.

5G Technical Specifications

Currently, 5G service is operational in central Kyiv, covering the area from Maidan Nezalezhnosti to Bessarabska Square. During testing of lifecell's 5G network, data traffic consumption rose by 75%, while the number of simultaneous sessions increased by 35%. Data transfer speeds on the 5G network exceed 1 Gbps, with average speeds recorded between 600-700 Mbps. According to Kyivstar, their 5G network achieves average speeds of 600-800 Mbps, with peak speeds surpassing 1.7 Gbps.

As of now, 29% of smartphones in Ukraine are 5G-compatible. Over 1.5 million Ukrainians have already tested the new technology.

“The results of the pilot project have confirmed strong user interest in the new technology,” said Mykhailo Shelemba.

Stanislav Prybytko emphasized that “the launch of 5G in Kyiv is another important step toward modernizing Ukraine’s telecom infrastructure.” Oleksandr Komarov highlighted 5G’s potential to relieve pressure on LTE networks: “Today, we see the greatest potential of 5G in offloading LTE networks in locations where thousands of people are using mobile connectivity simultaneously.”

In summary, the introduction of 5G in Kyiv marks a significant milestone for Ukraine’s telecommunications infrastructure, promising improved connection quality and user convenience. This launch is also expected to foster the development of new technologies and services that require high data speeds, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), virtual reality, and other innovative solutions—potentially benefiting multiple sectors of Ukraine’s economy.
