American military and intelligence officials note that Russia has made steady gains in the war in Ukraine, and the conflict is no longer stagnant. The New York Times reports that pessimistic sentiments prevail in Kyiv and Washington as Ukraine continues to lose territory in the east, and the Russian army advances into the Kursk region.

"The situation is tense," says Ukrainian major with the call sign "Grizzly". "We are constantly losing previously held positions, the enemy has an advantage in manpower and artillery, and we are trying to hold the line."

According to the publication, the death toll of Ukrainian military personnel has already reached about 57,000, which constitutes half of the Russian soldiers killed.

The New York Times also reports an increase in the number of Russian drone attacks, indicating the evolution of the Russian army.

“This is a very tough fight, and it's a tough path,” said U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin during his visit to Ukraine.

According to American officials, Ukraine's main problem has become a shortage of manpower, not weapons. The Pentagon estimates that Ukraine can conduct combat operations for 6-12 months, after which it will face a serious shortfall.

The New York Times also reports that President Zelensky, during a meeting with American officials, raised concerns over setbacks in the war and the upcoming U.S. elections.
