Forced Relocation Ordered for Residents of Chernihiv Region's Border Areas

According to UATV: Starting July 1, a mandatory evacuation will be enforced across 12 settlements in four communities of Chernihiv Oblast: Koriukivka, Horodnia, Novhorod-Siverskyi, and Semenivka. The decision, made by the regional Defense Council, gives residents two months to relocate. This measure comes amid ongoing security threats in the region, which borders Russia and has faced repeated shelling and military activity since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.

During a previous winter evacuation, some residents chose to leave, while others stayed behind after signing official waivers. Currently, approximately 1,000 people remain in these settlements, including 120 children. Viacheslav Chaus, head of the Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, stated:

'According to data from the communities and the Regional Military Administration, about a thousand residents are still in all these settlements. Among them are 120 children.' — Viacheslav Chaus

This statement underscores the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for evacuation to protect civilian lives.

Why the Evacuation Is Happening and What It Means

The mandatory evacuation reflects the deteriorating security environment along Chernihiv's border, driven by ongoing hostilities and the risk of enemy incursions. Leaving civilians, especially children, in such vulnerable conditions could have severe consequences, making this relocation a critical step to safeguard lives and health.

Local authorities and state agencies are coordinating the effort, aiming to complete the process within two months. This timeline allows for orderly planning and safe transfer of residents to more secure areas within Ukraine.
