Respiratory Illness Situation in Odesa

According to Novyny.live: Medical authorities in Odesa are observing a seasonal increase in respiratory infections as spring begins in 2023, though no dramatic surge in cases was recorded in March. This report examines the current situation regarding acute respiratory diseases (ARD) and pneumonia in the city, highlighting the importance of professional medical care and preventive measures.

Tetiana Kaftan, Director of the Municipal Non-Commercial Enterprise 'Primary Health Care Center No. 5' in the Odesa District, stated that 63 patients with pneumonia are currently receiving hospital treatment in the city. She noted that

"Currently, 63 patients in our city are receiving inpatient treatment. This fully corresponds to the seasonal incidence rate and is not an increased indicator regarding hospitalization."

The majority of respiratory infections are treated on an outpatient basis, with pneumonia being a potential complication of such illnesses.

Patient Visits and Prevention

An increase in patient visits with ARD symptoms has been registered in March. Tetiana Kaftan indicated that

"If we compare it with December, the incidence of ARD is somewhat higher."
She added,
'Yes, we are prepared. The vast majority of pneumonia cases are treated by family doctors on an outpatient basis, and currently very effectively. We hospitalize only a small number of patients who truly require it.'

Kaftan also emphasized the serious problem of antimicrobial resistance, stating,

'Currently, we are facing colossal resistance to antibacterial drugs.'
This underscores the need for particular caution in treating respiratory diseases and adhering to preventive measures. Public health officials stress that it is crucial for the population to understand the dangers of self-medication and to seek professional medical help at the first signs of illness.

The overall respiratory disease situation in Odesa in early spring 2023 demonstrates relative stability, despite the rise in ARD cases. Medical professionals highlight the effectiveness of outpatient treatment and the necessity of avoiding self-treatment, which can lead to serious complications. The concerning issue of antibiotic resistance further reinforces the importance of following preventive measures to curb the spread of infections.
