Statement by Olena Shuliak on Property Registration in Occupied Territories

According to Novyny.live: Registering property in occupied territories according to Russian legislation violates Ukrainian law and may lead to legal liability, warned Olena Shuliak, head of a committee in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. She made the statement on March 18 during a broadcast on Ranok.LIVE.

Shuliak emphasized that any registration or sale of real estate under Russian legal frameworks constitutes a serious offense.

“This is a violation of Ukrainian law. And it is certainly not welcomed in our state,” she stressed.

A key detail is that Ukrainian citizens lack the ability to freely manage property located in occupied territories. Shuliak also pointed out that residents of temporarily occupied areas will not be eligible to use the international mechanism for compensation of damages.

Risks of Property Registration in Occupied Territories

Ukraine operates a Register of Damages Caused by Russian Aggression, which documents losses suffered by Ukrainian citizens as a result of the war. This issue remains critical, as registering property under the laws of the aggressor nation could complicate the process of obtaining compensation and securing legal ownership rights.

Registering property in occupied territories not only breaches Ukrainian law but also carries serious repercussions for those who choose to take this step. It is essential that Ukrainians understand the risks associated with such registration and adhere to national legislation, which protects their rights and interests.

Shuliak’s statement underscores the importance of upholding Ukrainian law even amid war and occupation, reminding citizens that actions which may seem advantageous in the short term can lead to severe legal consequences. As the situation in occupied territories remains challenging, Ukrainian authorities continue to seek ways to safeguard the rights of their citizens and ensure justice in compensating for losses caused by Russian aggression.
