One of the two power supply lines to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) was damaged as a result of Russian shelling. There is a risk of losing external power for cooling the reactors if the second line is also damaged. This was reported by the press service of NAEC 'Energoatom'.

Currently, the ZNPP is connected to the Ukrainian power system by only one power transmission line, the statement said.

As of September 2, 2024, due to Russian shelling, one of the two external overhead lines through which the temporarily occupied ZNPP receives power from the Ukrainian power system for its own needs has been damaged.

If the second line is damaged, an emergency situation will arise due to the loss of external power for the pumps that cool the active zones of the reactors and the spent fuel pools at the ZNPP.

Ukrainian specialists currently cannot inspect the damage site and start repairing the line due to the real threat of shelling by Russian troops. The line will be repaired as soon as safety for specialists is ensured, 'Energoatom' reported.

President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that it is possible to return the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant under Ukraine's control through political means.

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, visited the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant after visiting the Zaporizhzhia NPP.

According to assessments by the Institute for the Study of War, Russian officials tried to use the visit of the IAEA Director General to the Kursk NPP to portray Ukraine as a threat of a radiation incident to undermine Western support.

Earlier, Rafael Grossi stated that the nuclear safety situation at the Zaporizhzhia NPP is deteriorating after a drone strike near the plant's territory.
