After Meeting Putin, Russian Oligarchs Pledge 220 Billion Rubles to Fund Ukraine War.
How Russia’s Wealthy Elite Are Bankrolling the War
According to UATV: Following a closed-door meeting with President Vladimir Putin, Russia’s oligarchs have committed 220 billion rubles to support the war against Ukraine. That figure is 130 times higher than the annual forecast, underscoring the seriousness of the business elite’s backing for military operations. The meeting took place on March 26, during which Putin called on business leaders to provide financial assistance.
Available data shows that Russia’s federal budget deficit for January through April 2026 reached nearly 6 trillion rubles. That shortfall is more than one and a half times the planned annual target, raising concerns about the country’s financial stability.
Dmitry Peskov, the presidential press secretary: 'One of the participants proposed allocating a “very large sum.”'
The decision by Russian oligarchs to funnel substantial funds into the war effort highlights their willingness to align with state policy even as the economy struggles. This move may signal a growing role for private capital in military decision-making, as well as the Kremlin’s effort to tap the private sector to cover financial strains caused by the conflict in Ukraine. Observers note that such financial backing could be an attempt to shore up Putin’s regime amid mounting economic instability.
