New EU Sanctions Target Russia's Max Messenger

According to Espreso.tv: The European Union has imposed fresh sanctions on the Russian messaging platform Max, alleging it was developed under the control of the Federal Security Service (FSB). The restrictions also extend to companies linked to surveillance systems in Russia, including VK Holding and Communication Platform LLC. Additionally, the sanctions target Citadel, VAS Experts, Norsi-Trans, and four individuals holding executive positions within these firms. This move is part of ongoing EU efforts to counter perceived security risks associated with Russian technology.

Kremlin Response and Apple's Actions

Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin's press secretary, dismissed the sanctions as 'completely absurd.' He expressed confidence that the Max messenger

“will develop rapidly despite any EU sanctions”
- Dmitry Peskov. Peskov also urged users to 'switch to Android,' a statement that hints at efforts to find workarounds in response to actions by Western companies.

Separately, in late June, Apple removed all 16 apps from the VK holding group from the App Store. In retaliation, Russia's Federal Antimonopoly Service accused Apple of 'discriminating' against search engines. The agency has given Apple until July 15, 2026, to address the alleged discrimination. Failure to comply could result in a fine of up to 4 billion rubles.

These developments highlight escalating tensions between Russia and Western nations amid the current geopolitical climate. The EU sanctions underscore growing Western scrutiny of technology's role in security, while Apple's app removals and Russia's antitrust response reveal a deepening rift. This situation may further isolate Russia technologically, pushing it to seek alternative solutions to sustain its digital services.
