UN Rebuts Trump's Criticism, Reaffirms Its Core Mission of Peacekeeping.
The United Nations and Its New Peace Council
According to TSN.ua: In response to criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding a new Peace Council, the United Nations has reaffirmed its commitment to its founding Charter. Deputy UN Spokesperson Farhan Haq emphasized that the organization is making every effort to improve its operations and increase its effectiveness. He stated that the UN will continue to work tirelessly for peace with full respect for international law.
Haq made these remarks during a press briefing, highlighting the significance of UN Secretary-General António Guterres's initiative, known as UN 80. This initiative aims to strengthen cooperation between various regional organizations and defense alliances that have coexisted with the UN for 80 years. The UN often faces political pressure from member states, yet it maintains its operational focus on global stability.
UN Resolve in the Face of Challenges
It was also confirmed that the decision to establish a Peace Council for work in Gaza was approved by the UN Security Council. Notably, António Guterres was unable to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos due to illness. This situation underscores the complex challenges confronting the UN, yet the organization remains dedicated to its core objective of promoting global peace.
“By demonstrating its resolve, the UN underscores the importance of international cooperation in the face of the global challenges confronting the modern world.” - Farhan Haq
The UN 80 initiative and the creation of the Peace Council represent a response to the need for strengthening international legal order and stability in conflict zones like Gaza. These actions illustrate the UN's drive to actively address crises and secure peace in regions requiring urgent attention.
