Rising Heating Tariffs: 6 Ways to Save up to £801.
The Importance of Preparing for the Cold
According to The Sun: As the cold weather approaches and energy bills rise, preparing your home for winter becomes critically important.
From October 1st, the energy price cap will increase by 2%, which will lead to an increase in the average annual bill for households paying by direct debit from £1,720 to £1,755.
Despite the decrease in wholesale energy prices, Ofgem reports that this increase reflects ongoing costs to maintain the UK’s energy infrastructure.
As households prepare for rising costs, it is important to find ways to save on energy bills.
How to Prepare Your Home for Winter and Save up to £801 on Energy Bills
Upgrade Radiator Valves – Save £75 a Year
Thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) control the flow of hot water to radiators. These energy-saving devices sense the room temperature and adjust the amount of hot water flowing into the radiator.
The average household can save up to £75 a year by fitting TRVs to all their radiators, according to data from British Gas.
Experts recommend fitting TRVs to 2 or 3 in the average room. If the room does not need heating, set the TRV to the lowest setting, ensuring protection against freezing and providing hot water only when the temperature drops below 7°C.
Adjust Your Boiler – Save £65 a Year
Lowering the boiler flow temperature to 60°C or below could save you up to £65 a year, experts from Nesta say.
“However, condensing combination boilers can operate efficiently at lower flow temperatures of 60-65°C, reducing gas consumption and improving efficiency.”
Install a Thermostat – Save £90 a Year
Setting the thermostat to a comfortable temperature, usually between 18°C and 21°C, is one of the simplest ways to cut costs while keeping your home warm.
Lowering it by just 1°C can save you up to £90 a year, according to Energy Saving Trust.
“Every degree raised on the thermostat can increase your heating costs by about 10%, so it’s important to find the right balance.”
Check Your Radiators – Save £25 a Year
Trapped air in radiators can elevate your energy bills due to decreased efficiency. The issue is easily resolved — it's a quick and inexpensive procedure.
Improve Loft Insulation – Save £390
Loft insulation creates a barrier that keeps heat inside your home, reducing the need for central heating. Many homes already have some loft insulation, usually a few inches deep between the beams. Experts recommend increasing the thickness to 270 mm for maximum effectiveness.
“Insulating the loft can reduce your annual energy costs by £390 for a detached house.”
Sealing Gaps – Save £145 a Year
Sealing gaps in your home is an easy way to reduce energy costs and make the space more comfortable. Blocking gaps around windows, doors, and floors can save you around £85 a year. Additionally, sealing an open chimney when not in use can provide an extra £60 savings a year.
By following these simple tips, you not only prepare your home for winter but also significantly lower your energy bills!
Preparing for the cold is not just a matter of comfort, but also savings. Applying the recommendations above could substantially reduce heating costs, which is especially important in the current climate of rising energy prices. Take care of your home and your financial well-being today!
