The conversion rule at the Ryder Cup: why the half point for injury caused a scandal.
According to The Sun: Paige Spiranac expressed her outrage at the 'illogical' rule after the USA team's defeat in the Ryder Cup.
This rule appeared after Viktor Hovland withdrew from the tournament due to injury before the finals in New York.

Shane Lowry made a crucial shot for the European team, which managed to hold onto the Ryder Cup.
This happened despite an impressive comeback by the USA team, which had a chance to snatch victory.
The European team reached the magical mark of 14 ½ points after Tyrrell Hatton's draw with Collin Morikawa.
The Norwegian player experienced neck problems on Saturday, leading to the introduction of the 'conversion' rule.
Conversion Rule
This rule had not been used for 32 years and only twice in the entire history of the Ryder Cup. It stipulates that both team captains write the name of one player on a piece of paper. If an opponent has an injury, the player on the paper is excluded from the game.
In the current tournament, both the European team and the USA team received a half point during the final matches.
However, had Europe won by just a half point, it could have been a result of Hovland not losing to Harris English.

Paige noted that the rule that could cost the USA the title without giving Hovland a chance to play is absurd.
She believes that the point should not be split between teams but should fully transfer to the other side.
“It’s unfortunate that Hovland is injured and can’t play, but it should be an automatic point for the other team. Getting a half point is madness. If it were the other way around, I’d say the same. Either replace someone, or no one gets points.”
Hovland underwent an MRI after exacerbating his pain. The European team’s chief medical officer, Dr. Andrew Murray, commented:
“Victor’s pain started during the morning foursomes. He received treatment and medications from the physiotherapist and medical team during the match. He tried to warm up before Saturday’s match but felt a worsening of pain while swinging the club. He also had a lack of mobility in his neck, so he withdrew from the match, and he was replaced by Tyrrell Hatton. An MRI was arranged after consultation between the European team and the PGA America medical team, which confirmed the exacerbation of a prior injury.”
“This morning, Victor received further treatment, but unfortunately, he couldn’t rotate or bend his neck to one side, making participation in the final matches impossible.”
Thus, Hovland’s injury situation forced the tournament to resort to an unusual rule that caused outrage among many participants. It highlights how important player health and competition rules are, which ultimately must ensure fair play for all participants. The discussion of the appropriateness of such rules continues, and changes may be ahead that could make competitions even fairer and clearer.
