Before the match against Wilson at the British Open, the world number 14 Chris Wakelin dismissed the rivalry, calling it 'a sausage competition.'
He stated:
“Games are never easy. It was an amazing season last year, but I didn't have any easy draws in any tournament. It doesn't work like that now. You have to play against tough opponents in every round.”
Wakelin also added:
“I find it quite pathetic: ‘I want to be the best at something that probably doesn't really affect your game.’ I want to be the best in every aspect.”
He urged both players to focus on more important aspects of the game:
“Every time they pick up a tool, they say: ‘I'm the best because I potted one ball.’ There is a life to be lived, guys. Think of something else to discuss.”
Performances at the British Open
Murphy sparked the controversy by winning the Masters in January, handing the title of best player with the tool to Wilson.
In particular, he noted:
“I would actually say Kyren is better with the tool than I am.”
Murphy also said:
“I think he has a much bigger range of shots he can execute.”
Wakelin's comments did not affect the success of both players in their matches at the British Open. Wilson won 4-1 against his 33-year-old opponent, while Murphy comfortably defeated Scottish Ross Muir.
The world number one Judd Trump also continues in the competition, having convincingly defeated Irishman Aaron Gill and is now preparing for a match against his compatriot Leonne Crowley on Thursday.
Thus, the public rivalry between Wilson and Murphy continues to draw attention, although some players, like Wakelin, urge them to focus on the essence of the game. This moment adds intrigue to the events at the British Open, where exciting matches unfold among leading players.
