Ukrainian Fuel Prices Set to Rise in January: How Much More Will Gasoline Cost?.
Fuel Price Increase in Ukraine
According to Novyny.live: Fuel prices in Ukraine are expected to rise in January due to a combination of higher global oil prices and a weaker Ukrainian hryvnia against the euro and US dollar. Serhiy Kuyun, director of the consulting firm 'A-95', has indicated that this increase is imminent. This situation is a common challenge for import-dependent economies facing currency pressures.
The exchange rate of the dollar to the hryvnia has already added about 1 UAH to the cost of fuel. Currently, gasoline prices have risen by approximately 2 to 2.5 hryvnias per liter. A significant factor influencing prices has been the increase in fuel excise taxes. The third stage of a planned excise tax hike concluded in Ukraine on January 1, 2026. The excise tax on gasoline was raised by 1 UAH 75 kopiykas per liter, on diesel by 2 UAH 25 kopiykas, and on autogas by 1 UAH 50 kopiykas. Previous excise tax increases occurred in September 2024 and January 2025.
Average Fuel Prices
As of January 15, the average retail fuel prices are as follows:
- Gasoline A-95 — 58.44 UAH per liter
- Diesel — 58.29 UAH per liter
- Autogas — 38.08 UAH per liter
These changes in fuel costs could significantly impact the budgets of Ukrainian households and the overall transportation market in the country.
The rise in Ukrainian fuel prices mirrors global economic trends, including fluctuations in world oil prices and shifting currency exchange rates. The excise tax hikes are also part of a government policy aimed at increasing budget revenues, though this may place an additional burden on consumers. In the short term, such changes are likely to lead to higher transportation costs and, consequently, increases in the prices of goods and services across other sectors of the economy.
