According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Ukrainian military forces were unable to replicate the success of the 'Kursk breakthrough' in the Belgorod region. They were forced to leave this territory due to the strong preparation of Russian troops for repelling cross-border attacks.

According to open source reports and testimonies, Ukrainian troops have not held positions in the Belgorod region since August 16. However, the ISW report notes that Ukrainian soldiers managed to advance approximately 10 kilometers in the area of the 'Khotilovka' border checkpoint before being forced to leave this territory.

According to Ukrainian military testimonies, Russian troops were better prepared to repel Ukrainian attacks than in the Kursk region. They established numerous anti-tank fortifications near the border and mined the territory. Artillery units and aviation carried out attacks on Ukrainian troops as they attempted to cross the border.

Moreover, the Institute for the Study of War notes that Russian troops are likely better protecting some sections of the border than others. After the operation began, Ukrainian troops quickly advanced on other sections of the border with the Kursk region.
