Scholes names unexpected leader among Premier League midfielders: who has surpassed Rice

According to The Sun: Paul Scholes shared his unexpected choice for the best midfielder in the Premier League, ignoring Moisés Caicedo and Declan Rice.

The Chelsea star Caicedo is showing impressive form this season, scoring his third goal of the campaign in the match against Liverpool on Saturday.

The player, worth 115 million pounds, scored an incredible goal from distance.

Many experts, including Scholes' former Manchester United teammate Gary Neville, have already rated Caicedo as the best midfielder in England.

Many are also highlighting Declan Rice as one of the best in this area.

The England international has one goal and three assists for Arsenal, which currently tops the Premier League table after seven matches.

Despite this, Scholes is convinced that none of these players deserve the title of the best.

The former player believes that although Caicedo is a strong defensive player, he lacks creativity in attack.

As for Rice, Scholes noted that he is too focused on technical play and often holds onto the ball too long.

Tonali's candidacy

Instead, Scholes believes that the best midfielder in the Premier League is Sandro Tonali from Newcastle.

The Italian has not yet scored in the league this season but already has one assist.

Tonali has participated in all of Newcastle's matches and has significantly strengthened the team after returning from a betting ban.

Scholes also pointed out Alexis Mac Allister from Liverpool and noted that the team's struggles are largely related to his inconsistent form.

Scholes said to The Overlap:

“(The best in the league?) It's difficult.
“I still don't consider Moisés Caicedo a complete midfielder. I know he scored a great goal and has been outstanding recently.
“I received criticism last year for my opinion on him and was almost ready to change it, as he was exceptional at the Club World Cup.
“I just prefer midfielders who have control and play with greater style, and can score more often.
“That was a great goal, but you wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t repeat that for another 18 months.
“He is one of the best in his role when it comes to breaking up attacks, and he’s brilliant at that, but I prefer different types.”
“I really love Sandro Tonali; he has been excellent, very good. I’d probably pick Tonali right now.”
“Alexis Mac Allister was absolutely outstanding last season; he controlled a lot of matches, and I think Liverpool is currently lacking that.”
“I really appreciate Rice, don’t get me wrong, I think he has everything. But sometimes he takes too many passes and tries to look stylish more than necessary.”

Scholes also expressed high praise for Alexis Mac Allister from Liverpool.

Thus, the debates about the best midfielders in the Premier League continue. However, Scholes' ranking may provoke mixed reactions, as many fans and analysts are already actively supporting the candidacies of Caicedo and Rice, who are indeed demonstrating a high level of play. Time will tell if Tonali will prove his worth in this ranking during the upcoming matches for Newcastle.
