Olympics-2024: scandals and sensations

On July 26, a solemn opening ceremony of the Olympic Games-2024 took place in Paris. In the first days of the competition, the Olympics attracted attention with a series of scandals and sensations. 'Glavcom' has compiled a selection of the most important news of the Olympics-2024 so that you are aware of all the main events.

Transgenders made a parody of the 'Last Supper'

During the opening ceremony of this year's summer Olympic Games in Paris, a drag queen parody of Leonardo da Vinci's 'The Last Supper' was shown on stage. The skit outraged Christians, who accused the organizers of mocking Christianity.

During the performance, 18 actors sat at a long table, and in the center stood a woman with a large silver headpiece resembling a halo, as in images of Jesus. Then there was an impromptu fashion show on stage accompanied by dances.

Later, a massive dance appeared on stage, on which a man curled up in a ball, painted in shiny blue color, lay.

The organizers stated that the performance was an 'interpretation of the Greek god (wine and celebration) Dionysus,' which was supposed to 'show us the absurdity of violence among people.' But many did not like the show, which they accused of mocking Christianity. Later, the organizers of the Olympics in Paris apologized for the parody of 'The Last Supper'.

Lady Gaga's performance at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games

Lady Gaga's performance at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris became one of the most discussed events of this summer. While her spectacular show, in which the singer combined elements of theater, music, and sports, captivated many viewers, it also provoked a flood of criticism.

The main reason for the scandal is that the Olympic organizers invited an American star to perform the main song of the opening ceremony, not a French one. Many French people believe that their singer should have performed at such an important national holiday. Critics' arguments are diverse: from Gaga's accent during the performance of the French song to the general dissatisfaction that a foreign star overshadowed local talents.

Social media literally exploded with comments, memes, and hashtags dedicated to this issue. Many users expressed outrage that their culture was allegedly demeaned by inviting a foreign star. Others, on the contrary, defended the organizers' decision, noting that Gaga is a global star who can attract additional attention to the Olympics.

Macron was booed at the opening of the Olympic Games

At the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris, the audience booed French President Emmanuel Macron. This was written by the leader of the French party 'Patriots' Florian Philippot.

Philippot wrote that 'even a carefully selected audience' expressed clear dissatisfaction with Macron's appearance, which 'even surprised him'.

Canada's coaching staff engaged in espionage

Canada's national team coaching staff monitored the training of their opponents using a drone. A similar situation occurred during a closed training session of the New Zealand national team before their face-to-face match at the Olympics.

Shortly thereafter, head coach Beverly Priestman was fired from the team. Also, those directly involved in the scandal were assistant coach Jasmine Mander and analyst Joseph Lombardy.

As a result of the situation, FIFA deducted six points from Canada's women's team in the group stage of the Olympic football tournament. Specifically, the Canadian Football Federation will have to pay a fine of $226.

Ukrainian tennis players set a national record

In the first round of the Olympic competition, Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina (No. 31 WTA) confidently defeated Japan's Miyuki Uchijima (No. 66 WTA) with a score of 6:2, 6:1. In the next round, Svitolina will face American Jessica Pegula (No. 6 WTA) or Swiss Viktoriya Golubic (No. 79 WTA).

Also, Marta Kostyuk and Dayana Yastremska advanced to the second round of the Olympic Games-2024 in singles. This means that Ukraine has set a national record for representation in the second round of the Games. The previous record was set at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Back then, Ukrainian players Maria Koryttseva and Alona Bondarenko made it to the second round.
