Peter Schmeichel changed his mind about the Manchester United goalkeeper: what was the reason.
Peter Schmeichel's comments on the new Manchester United goalkeeper
According to The Sun: Peter Schmeichel softened his criticism of the new Manchester United goalkeeper, Senne Lammens, after the impressive debut of the 23-year-old goalkeeper, which delighted fans.
Lammens made his debut for United in the match against Sunderland, where the team won 2-0, replacing Altay Bayındır at the beginning of the season.
APAlthough he was not tested much, Lammens looked confident, keeping a clean sheet and showing calmness with the ball.
In the stands, fans even sang: “Are you Schmeichel in disguise?”, referring to the club's legendary goalkeeper who played 398 matches for Manchester United.
Schmeichel responded to the fans' chants during an interview on BBC 5 Live, happily noting:
“Thank you for singing that. It’s nice – finally to see stable play and a clean sheet. We conceded too many goals due to goalkeeper errors – I think there have already been nine this season. That’s a lot.”
“When I played – and I'm sure it was the same for van der Sar and De Gea – it is expected that the goalkeeper should save the team 10 points a season, not give them away.”
Thus, Schmeichel's comments indicate a change in his attitude towards Lammens, considering his previous criticism of United's goalkeeper selection.
Last month he expressed doubts about signing Lammens, saying:
“We should have signed Emi Martinez. In fact, we should have looked at Donnarumma when we had the chance.”
Initially, Schmeichel admitted that he did not know about Lammens, but his successful debut seems to be changing that situation. After a successful performance, Lammens is beginning to prove his worth for the club and win the trust of the most authoritative voices at Manchester United.
