Lost in His Own Backyard: Man Rescued After 9 Hours in Odessa Catacombs.
Rescue in Usatove: A Dangerous Descent
According to Novyny.live: On June 12, emergency teams in the village of Usatove, Odessa district, successfully located a man who became lost in the catacombs beneath his own property. The search operation took more than nine hours before he could be brought back to the surface.
The victim, born in 1979, entered the tunnel system and failed to return. Rescuers faced significant challenges due to the catacombs' intricate layout. In certain sections, the tunnels plunge as deep as 100 meters, and the entire network stretches roughly 2,500 kilometers. Year-round, the underground temperature remains steady at around +14 °C.
History and Ongoing Risks of the Catacombs
Exploration of the Odessa catacombs began as early as 1928. These subterranean passages have become a significant part of the city's heritage, yet their presence famously prevented the construction of a metro system in Odessa. People getting lost in the catacombs is a recurring issue, and incidents like this highlight the urgent need for greater public awareness about the dangers of entering these areas.
This event underscores the critical importance of caution when visiting the catacombs, which pose serious hazards due to their complex structure and immense length.
Authorities and rescue services must continue educating the public about the risks associated with these underground systems to prevent similar emergencies. Furthermore, this incident could serve as a catalyst for developing enhanced safety protocols and security measures in such locations, especially as their popularity grows among both tourists and locals.
