Contractors Refuse Road Repairs Citing Military Vehicle Damage; Parliament Demands Investigation.
Ukraine’s Road Repair Guarantee Crisis
According to Novyny.live: Across Ukraine, construction firms are declining to carry out warranty repairs on roads, blaming damage inflicted by heavy military equipment. In response, lawmakers are pushing for audits of contracts and enforcement of warranty obligations. This situation has raised alarms among state agencies, as road surface quality directly affects traffic safety.
The issue of warranty road repairs has become pressing as contractors refuse to fix defects. Volodymyr Kreydenko, a lawmaker from the 'Servant of the People' faction, stressed that action is needed to address this problem. He stated:
'We demand that the ministry review all contracts and contact these contractors so that they rectify the flaws on the highways they repaired and provided warranties for.' – Volodymyr Kreydenko
Kreydenko added: 'If they took on the road repair and issued a warranty, then that road must be maintained and repaired at the expense of the contractor who may have laid asphalt poorly or handled the base layer improperly.' This highlights the need not only to resolve current issues but also to prevent similar situations in the future.
Funding for Road Repairs
It is worth noting that the government allocated 3 billion hryvnias from the reserve fund for road repairs. However, according to Oksana Savchuk, more than 51 billion hryvnias are needed for road repair and maintenance across Ukraine. This funding gap underscores the severity of the challenges facing the country’s road infrastructure.
In early March, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting on the state of Ukraine’s roads, reflecting the issue’s importance at the national level. This meeting could become a key step toward solving road repair problems and improving road quality. The situation demands urgent action from relevant authorities to ensure proper road infrastructure conditions in Ukraine.
The warranty road repair problem in Ukraine underscores the importance of oversight in state contract execution, especially during wartime when infrastructure suffers significant damage. Without proper repairs, future road maintenance costs could rise, and traffic safety could be compromised. Government initiatives and allocated funding may be important steps toward improvement, but their effectiveness depends on ensuring contractors fulfill their obligations.
