The Ukrainian community was shocked by the news that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin awarded Russian Paralympic medalists in Paris. One of them, swimmer Andriy Kalina, was even awarded the
‘Order of Honor’. It was surprising not only because of the award itself but also because Kalina was born in the Ukrainian city of Sloviansk and then changed his citizenship to compete for Russia. Another surprise was that the International Paralympic Committee recognized the Russian as a
‘neutral’athlete and allowed him to compete.
No less shocking information concerns Olympic champion Yevhen Rylov, who also supports Putin and the war against Ukraine. The European Parliament unanimously condemned Rylov and called for him to play for the Russian national team. The swimmer does not regret his decision and is preparing for international competitions under the Russian flag.
An unpleasant situation also occurred in the American National Hockey League, when the
‘Columbus’team canceled the
‘Russian Heritage Night’due to protests from Ukrainians. Russian fans wanted to hold this event, but Ukrainian organizations in Ohio addressed all authorities with a request not to conduct a political action.
