Floating Shame - Ukrainian Navy Reveals Russia's Only Aircraft Carrier.
Russia has problems with aircraft carriers, acknowledged Ukrainian military officials. The only aircraft carrier they have is the 'Admiral Kuznetsov', which was stolen by Ukrainians back in 1991. For more than 30 years, this ship has only broken down at night and fails to fulfill its tasks.
“In the 70 years of the USSR's history, we have not built a single real aircraft carrier. And the Russians managed to steal just one aircraft carrier-like ship from us in 1991 in half that time.”
In addition to technical problems with the 'Admiral Kuznetsov', Russia also faces issues due to a lack of the necessary aviation to operate the aircraft carrier. Furthermore, the absence of schools and a culture of carrier aviation complicates the situation for the country. According to the spokesperson of the Navy of Ukraine, Dmitry Pletenchuk, this emergency ship is not a point of pride for Russia but has become a significant problem that they are towing around.
Summary
Russia has problems with its only aircraft carrier, the 'Admiral Kuznetsov', not only due to the technical shortcomings of the ship but also because of the lack of necessary aviation and a culture of carrier aviation. This complicates the country’s defensive capabilities and threatens their security.
