Poland Confirms Talks to Supply Ukraine with Up to Nine MiG-29 Fighter Jets.
Poland to Supply MiG-29 Fighters to Ukraine
According to UATV: Poland's Deputy Defense Minister, Paweł Zalewski, has confirmed that negotiations are underway to transfer up to nine MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine. While Kyiv has accepted Warsaw's proposal, the final number of aircraft has not yet been finalized.
This potential transfer is part of deepening military cooperation between the two nations and underscores Poland's support for Ukraine amid ongoing regional threats. Poland had previously expressed willingness to provide the jets in exchange for access to certain Ukrainian missile and drone technologies.
"We are awaiting a response from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense. The talks are ongoing... these are purely technical negotiations."
Paweł Zalewski
This development follows a period of heightened tensions; at the end of last December, Russia attempted a major cyberattack aimed at cutting off Poland's power supply, which was neutralized according to Polish Digitalization Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski. Poland has been a key ally for Ukraine since the full-scale invasion began.
Strategic Importance of the Aircraft Transfer
The provision of MiG-29 fighters represents a significant step in strengthening military ties between Poland and Ukraine. It signals Poland's commitment to supporting Ukraine's sovereignty and defense capabilities in the face of Russian aggression.
For Ukraine, acquiring these additional aircraft could substantially enhance its air defense capacity and bolster its strategic position in the region.
