Poland to raise the issue of the Volyn tragedy in negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU.
In Poland, questions are being raised about the exhumation of Polish victims of the Volyn tragedy with the aim of establishing a "complex history" in relations with Ukraine. This will be part of the negotiations on Ukraine's EU membership. This was stated by Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Władysław Teofil Bartoszewski.
This issue will be considered during the first negotiations on the rule of law and justice. This section is important for Ukraine if it plans to continue the negotiation process. Bartoszewski emphasized that the dignified burial of Polish victims is necessary in the context of European culture and European rules.
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski also noted that the dignified burial of the victims of the Volyn crime – is not only a matter of cultural code but also a Christian duty.
The exhumation and burial of the victims of the Volyn tragedy is a highly controversial issue in relations between Ukraine and Poland. Kyiv and Warsaw have different views on the causes, responsibility, and number of victims. However, Poland urges Ukraine to adhere to European rules.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk supports cooperation with Ukraine and emphasizes the importance of expressing full empathy regarding the war and heroism of Ukraine.
