Ukraine will lose the 'trade visa-free' with the EU: when the new rules will take effect.

Poland will cancel the European mechanism for autonomous trade measures (ATM) from June 5, 2025, which allows duty-free import of goods from Ukraine.

As reported by 'Khvilya', the country's Prime Minister Donald Tusk conveyed this information to the Sejm of Poland, RMF24 writes.

According to Tusk, Poland wants to help Ukraine in its fight against Russia, but this should not come at the expense of Polish producers, particularly farmers.

From now on, duty-free imports of goods from Ukraine will be halted as of June 5, and Poland will return to the previous border regime due to farmer protests.

'This mechanism will not be in place on June 5. We are returning to the pre-war situation regarding border issues,' he emphasized.

Joining in the defense of Polish economic interests, Tusk stated that the government will be fully in a defensive position, even if this contradicts Ukraine’s interests. He feels no fear of being accused of hostility towards Ukraine.

Additional context

The ATM mechanism was implemented by the European Union in June 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. This mechanism allowed duty-free import of all Ukrainian goods into EU countries.

However, in 2023, the mechanism's term was extended, and in 2024 the European Commission proposed setting quotas on certain products to protect the EU market. This led to a series of farmer protests in Poland, blocking the border with Ukraine.

Moreover, the EU is considering the possibility of raising tariffs on imports from Ukraine.
