Polish Prime Minister declares state of disaster due to floods
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the declaration of a state of disaster due to floods that occurred in the south of the country. He reported this on his Twitter page.
«After consultations with competent ministers and services, I instructed the preparation of a cabinet order to introduce a state of disaster», – Tusk wrote.
The flood occurred in the Silesian and Lower Silesian Voivodeships of southern and southwestern Poland. This happened due to the overflow of the Nysa River after heavy rains. In some areas, bridges collapsed, and people are being evacuated with the help of helicopters.
The bad weather also led to flooding in Austria, the Czech Republic, and Romania. For example, in the Czech Republic, the flood was caused by prolonged rains that have been ongoing since September 12.
About 260,000 houses were left without electricity due to bad weather, and nearly 1,900 residents were evacuated. Rail traffic in the Moravian-Silesian region was almost completely halted.
In the town of Głuchołazy in Poland, the flood destroyed a bridge. Local authorities are urging people to evacuate. According to the publication, water overflowed through embankments on a temporary bridge over the Biała Głuchołaska River, causing the bridge to collapse.
