Lessons from Romania and Bulgaria: Why Ukraine Should Think Twice Before Rushing EU Membership.
Analyzing the EU Integration Experiences of Romania and Bulgaria
According to Espreso.tv: As part of the 'Eurointegration' project on Espreso, Dr. Myroslava Mainina, a philosopher and political scientist with a PhD in social and behavioral sciences, examined how Romania and Bulgaria navigated their paths into the European Union. She stressed that Ukraine must prioritize high-quality legislation and avoid the missteps these two nations made during their accession processes. According to Mainina, the Romanian and Bulgarian cases offer valuable cautionary tales for Ukraine as it pursues its own EU ambitions.
Dr. Mainina noted that while Romania and Bulgaria achieved EU membership relatively quickly, proving that successful integration is possible, Ukraine should not expect a similarly fast track.
“Don’t expect everything to happen quickly,” she warned.
The Critical Role of Sound Legislation
The scholar highlighted that the European Union has enacted laws specifically designed to support integration efforts.
“This is about learning from the mistakes made in Ukraine’s case,” Mainina explained. She added that this serves as “a good example for Ukraine to take into account and avoid repeating the errors” that Romania and Bulgaria committed when joining the bloc.
On June 15, 2023, all EU member states formally agreed to open the first cluster of accession negotiations for Ukraine and Moldova. This milestone demonstrates the EU’s backing for their European aspirations, yet the experiences of Romania and Bulgaria underscore that thorough preparation and robust legal frameworks are essential for successfully navigating the process.
Discussing Romania and Bulgaria’s integration journeys holds particular relevance for Ukraine as it works to fulfill its European goals. Expert recommendations, such as those from Mainina, can help the country sidestep past blunders and forge a more efficient route to EU membership. Achieving successful integration will demand not only political will but also meticulous groundwork on the legislative front, which in turn can foster stable development within the European Union.
