Portugal complicates migration: what has changed for Ukrainians.
According to inkorr.com: Portugal has adopted a new migration law that significantly changes the rules regarding family reunification, visa issuance, and citizenship.
According to Relocate data, the new law has received support from the ruling coalition and the right-wing parties Chega and Iniciativa Liberal, and it is now awaiting the president's signature.
Human rights activists have expressed concerns, emphasizing that these changes may complicate integration and limit migrants' rights, as family reunification procedures have become more complicated and financial requirements have increased.
Features of the new legislation
Under the new rules, migrants must live in Portugal for at least two years before they can apply for family reunification. They will also need to confirm sufficient income and housing to obtain their status.
Moreover, the new law stipulates that work visas will only be issued to highly qualified specialists. For Ukrainians and other foreigners, the waiting time for citizenship has significantly increased.
The adoption of this law has sparked active discussions and debates in society regarding its impact on the country’s migration policy and migrants' rights. Changes in legislation may significantly affect the conditions of stay and integration of foreigners into Portuguese society.
