State Border Guard Official Remanded in Custody Over $1 Million Bribe in Drone Procurement Case.
Arrest of a State Border Guard Service Official
According to Espreso.tv: A senior official from the Administration of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine has been detained on suspicion of demanding a bribe to secure a contract for the supply of unmanned aerial vehicles. A court has ordered pre-trial detention with the option of posting bail set at 4 million Ukrainian hryvnias.
In connection with the same case, a businessman has also been arrested and placed in custody, with bail set at 44,262,000 Ukrainian hryvnias. Investigative findings indicate that the total value of 270 unmanned aerial systems initially stood at 825 million hryvnias, but a new tender participant managed to reduce the price to 760 million hryvnias.
Corruption Schemes and Consequences
The high strategic importance placed on these drones led to the extortion of an illicit benefit amounting to US $1 million. The border guard official has been charged under Part 4 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, while the owner of the company involved in the tender faces charges under Parts 4 of Articles 27 and 4 of Article 368 of the same code. Ukraine's National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) has formally notified the official of suspicion for demanding a $1 million bribe.
This case has sparked widespread public outcry and highlighted the persistent issue of corruption in Ukraine, particularly within public procurement. Law enforcement authorities are continuing their investigation to uncover all the circumstances surrounding the crime.
The detention of the State Border Guard Service official and the businessman underscores the severity of corruption in Ukraine, especially in the realm of state procurement, where large sums of money can become targets of illicit activity. This situation risks damaging the reputation of state institutions and drawing increased scrutiny from international partners regarding the transparency and integrity of public financial management in Ukraine.
