Smuggling Ring Busted: Up to $10,000 Charged to Evade Ukraine’s Draft.
Cross-Border Criminal Network Exposed
According to Novyny.live: Law enforcement in Odesa region, working with Moldovan authorities, has uncovered an international operation that illegally transported men of military age across borders. Three suspects have been formally charged in connection with the scheme.
How the Operation Worked
The group moved individuals through Odesa, Transnistria, Moldova, Hungary, and Belarus. Since late 2023, investigators have documented 33 cases of illegal border crossings involving Ukrainian citizens. In total, more than 100 people are believed to have used the group’s services.
The alleged mastermind is a 48-year-old Ukrainian national living in Odesa. In 2025, a court in Chișinău convicted several group members for illegal migration. The cost for each person ranged from $2,000 to $10,000.
Legal Consequences for the Accused
Three individuals, including the suspected organizer, have been charged under Article 332, Part 3 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code. If convicted, they face up to nine years in prison and confiscation of assets.
This case highlights the ongoing challenge of combating illegal migration and organized crime, especially during wartime when men are subject to mobilization. Cooperation between Ukrainian and Moldovan law enforcement could prove critical in preventing such offenses in the future and strengthening border security for both nations.
