Passport process simplified for Ukrainians in Moldova: Key changes explained.
Easier path to citizenship for Ukrainians living in Moldova
According to Novyny.live: The Ukrainian government has introduced a streamlined procedure for obtaining citizenship specifically for Ukrainians residing in the Republic of Moldova, a country with a large Ukrainian diaspora. This decision was made by the Cabinet of Ministers, which added Moldova to a list of nations eligible for simplified passport processing.
Under current rules, acquiring Ukrainian citizenship requires passing an exam on the Ukrainian language, Constitution, and history. Applicants must also be physically present in Ukraine. However, Cabinet Resolution No. 589 now extends a simplified citizenship process to foreigners from a designated list of 'friendly' countries, which includes Moldova alongside 32 other nations.
Supporting the Ukrainian diaspora abroad
Yuliia Svyrydenko, a representative of the Cabinet of Ministers, stated that efforts are underway to enable remote exam-taking.
Other 'friendly' countries whose citizens can apply for simplified Ukrainian citizenship include:
- United Kingdom
- France
- Spain
- Germany
- Czech Republic
- Canada
- United States
- Italy
- Slovenia
- Switzerland
This move aims to support the Ukrainian community overseas and provide them with opportunities to return to their homeland.
The introduction of a simplified citizenship process for Ukrainians in Moldova reflects the Ukrainian government's commitment to assisting its citizens living abroad. Amid ongoing challenges such as war and economic hardship, this decision could serve as a vital step in strengthening ties between the diaspora and their home country. If implemented, remote exam-taking would also significantly ease the process for those unable to travel to Ukraine in person.
