Cascade of Emotions at Old Trafford

According to The Sun: A controversial situation occurred at Old Trafford when the team Sunderland was not awarded a penalty at the end of the first half.

Referee Stuart Attwell initially pointed to the penalty spot after discussing with the assistant, who reported a high kick by Benjamin Sesko from Manchester United against Trai Hulme following a long throw into the penalty area.

However, the referee did not notice a foul, and after consulting with the assistant, confirmed that a penalty should indeed be awarded.

Players, including Bruno Fernandes, expressed their outrage, as the replays showed that Sesko did not touch Hulme at all.

In his VAR cabin at Stockley Park, VAR official Neil Davis advised Attwell to review the situation on the screen.

After a long wait, the referee called Fernandes and Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka to himself.

The spectators guessed his decision even before he announced it, as Fernandes was already preparing his team for a corner kick from Sunderland.

As a result of the corner kick, the ball reached Daniel Ballard, who, having come on for Simon Adingra in the 37th minute, headed just wide of the goal before the break.

PGMOL later published a statement on Twitter.

“After reviewing the VAR, the referee overturned the initial penalty decision in favor of Sunderland.”

“As the ball went out of play, the final decision is a corner kick.”

By the time of the break, Manchester United was already leading 2-0 thanks to a brilliant goal from Mason Mount and an accurate shot from Sesko from close range.

This situation at Old Trafford highlighted the importance of VAR in modern football, as it can change the course of the game in the most unexpected moments. The referee's decision sparked lively discussions among fans and experts, as such situations often involve not just the score but also the emotions of the players and teams. Future matches will show how these events affect the teams' standings and their preparation for upcoming games.
