Finland's President Predicts 3–4 More Months of War, Urges NATO to Raise Defense Spending to 5% of GDP.
How Long Will the War in Ukraine Last?
According to Novyny.live: Finnish President Alexander Stubb expects the Russia-Ukraine war to continue for at least another three to four months. He dismissed warnings that Russia might be preparing to attack NATO countries, stating he sees no signs of such activity from the Kremlin. Stubb emphasized that Russia’s goal is to destabilize Europe and its member states as part of a hybrid operation designed to make Europeans themselves believe in the threat of a Russian attack.
The Case for Stronger Defense
He also stressed the need to increase pressure on Russia. Regarding European security, Finland’s president said NATO countries should allocate 5% of their GDP to defense by 2035. This underscores the importance of collective efforts to strengthen the alliance’s defense capabilities in the face of modern challenges.
In parallel, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy traveled to Brussels to attend a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group. This highlights ongoing international cooperation to support Ukraine amid the protracted war.
The Finnish president’s assessment of the war’s duration and his view that Russia poses no immediate threat suggest a degree of optimism about the situation. Yet his call for higher NATO defense spending reflects the seriousness of the security challenges Europe now faces.

Zelenskyy’s visit to Brussels for the Contact Group meeting also demonstrates the critical role of international support for Ukraine during this difficult period, which could influence future decisions by Western partners regarding military aid to Ukraine.
