Transnistria's Southern Threat: A Security Challenge for Ukraine.
The Threat from Transnistria
According to Novyny.live: The breakaway region of Transnistria poses a significant security risk to Ukraine, primarily through the actions of hostile intelligence services that organize terrorist acts and recruit citizens. Since 2014, Russia has utilized this territory as a staging ground for information warfare and has even infiltrated sabotage groups.
“Since 2014, Russia has used Transnistria as a platform for carrying out information sabotage, and has even sent in sabotage groups.”
Vitaliy Kulik, security expert
Currently, approximately 1,500 Russian military personnel are stationed in Transnistria, creating additional dangers for Ukraine. “This is dangerous. There are about 1,500 Russian military personnel there who can create problems,” Kulik noted. Furthermore, the region hosts 8,000 servicemen of the so-called 'Transnistrian Army' and another thousand individuals working in its intelligence services. This region, internationally recognized as part of Moldova, has been a source of instability since the 1990s.
Transnistria's Military Capabilities
Transnistria also possesses considerable military assets, which include:
- Multiple launch rocket systems
- Six tanks
- Armored personnel carriers (APCs)
- Small arms
Pro-Russian television channels administered from the region are actively recruiting Ukrainians to participate in terrorist attacks. These factors indicate a high level of threat emanating from this area, especially given Transnistria's collapsing economy. The threat from Transnistria underscores the critical need to monitor the situation there, particularly within the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine. Russian military presence and the activity of pro-Russian forces could significantly impact the security of Ukraine's western borders. Amidst Transnistria's economic instability, the risk of conflict escalation and increased hostile actions remains high, demanding appropriate countermeasures from Ukrainian authorities.
