The incredible journey of Primark
The first Primark store was opened in June 1969 under the name Penneys, after which the chain built stores across Ireland. However, due to the brand's growth, the American chain JC Penney forbade the use of the name Penneys, and then the Irish brand renamed its stores in England to Primark. The name was chosen because of the Italian word 'prima', meaning 'first', and the owner hoped it would leave a mark. Today, Primark is one of the most popular stores in the UK with 192 stores as of December 2024.
