Today, Plovdiv is an important center of economy, transport, culture, and education.

The first settlements in Plovdiv were founded on one of the hills, in the area of the city of Nebet-tepe, around 4300 BC. Then around this settlement, a city emerged, which was fortified by the Thracians around 1200 BC and named Eumolpia after King Eumolpus. In 342 BC, the city was conquered by Philip II and received a new name - Philippopolis. Philip II greatly expanded and strengthened the fortifications, and it became an important city known as Tanais.

Compared to the oldest city in Greece, Athens, Plovdiv has an even older history. Athens has existed for about 3000 years, while Plovdiv has an incredible history that began at least 6,000 years ago.
