U.S. Prosecutors Claim Trump 'Engaged in Crimes' to Retain Power in 2020.
Donald Trump laid the groundwork in advance for an attempt to overturn the 2020 election, knowingly making false allegations of vote fraud and crimes.
This is stated in the released court documents, which contain new evidence in the 2020 election case.
"Although the defendant was the sitting president at the Time of the conspiracy, his scheme was essentially private. After losing the 2020 election, he committed crimes in an attempt to remain in power," noted the lawsuit by special prosecutor Jack Smith's team.
The document alleges that Trump "laid the groundwork" to reject the election results before their final count by telling his advisors that if he was leading early on, he would declare his victory before the final vote count and prediction of the winner.
It is noted that immediately after the election his advisors sought to provoke chaos in the vote counting. For example, one member of his campaign, considered his supporter, was informed that the results at a polling station in Michigan in favor of Joe Biden were accurate. He likely replied: "find a reason it's not" and "give me a chance to file a lawsuit."
The released documents state that Trump accused of fraud, even though he knew it was not true. He acknowledged that the accusations of violations in the election, made by his lawyer, were "nonsensical" and referred to the science fiction series "Star Trek".
Prosecutors also claim that Trump used his Twitter account to spread false claims about election fraud, attacks on "truth-tellers" who spoke of his defeat, and calls for his supporters to come to Washington on January 6, 2021, when there was an attempt to storm the Capitol.
