EU prepares to confiscate 230 billion euros of Russian assets: how it will change the course of the war.
According to ТСН: The European Union has real potential to change the situation in the Russo-Ukrainian war if it decides to confiscate the frozen assets of Russia and transfer them to Ukraine.
Currently, around 230 billion euros of Russian assets are blocked in the EU. These funds could be used to finance Ukraine's defense needs — from the purchase of weapons to strengthening the economic resilience of the state.
The authors of the publication emphasize: this is a decision that can give Ukraine a significant military advantage. If this money is used for weapons and ammunition, Europe will be able to quickly and effectively enhance the defense capabilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Moreover, confiscation could become a historic step, creating a precedent for punishing the aggressor for international aggression and violations of the world order.
What Europe fears
Despite the positive prospects for Ukraine, this decision faces political concerns in some EU countries. Discussions are underway about possible legal risks and the likely negative reaction from other authoritarian regimes.
Several states are worried that such actions could create a dangerous precedent for foreign investment in Europe and affect its financial stability.
The Telegraph claims that Europe looks weak in the face of the aggressive policies of the Kremlin. However, the confiscation of Russian assets could be a decision that changes the picture of the war and the role of the EU in global security.
Ukraine continues to urge its partners to support the relevant decision at the EU level, as each day of delay carries a high price on the battlefield.
Additionally, Ukraine plans to receive about 1 billion euros in additional financial support from European partners for the purchase of American weapons by the end of 2025.
Under the PURL program, European states are financing the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine. Hetmanchuk emphasized that stable funding will allow Kyiv to continuously receive the necessary equipment.
Ukraine is also continuing to resist Russian attacks and massive airstrikes, which have intensified with the drop in temperature and changes in battlefield conditions. Furthermore, the Netherlands has already announced an allocation of an additional 250 million euros for the purchase of American air defense systems and F-16 fighters, as reported by the country's Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans before the meeting of European ministers in Brussels.
In the context of the ongoing war, the confiscation of Russian assets will be an important component of supporting Ukraine. Every step in this direction can influence the outcomes of the conflict, so political decisions in Europe are critically important for the further development of events.
