RF may impose restrictions on access to information

The RF State Duma Committee on Information Policy approved amendments to the law "On Communication," which allow President Vladimir Putin to impose restrictions on access to information. This is provided for protecting the foundations of the constitutional order, morality, health, rights, and legitimate interests of other persons, as well as for ensuring the defense of the country and state security.

According to the amendments, Roskomnadzor will have the right to manage communication networks and delete "prohibited" information at the request of the Prosecutor General of Russia.

Experts from the Institute for the Study of War note that passing these amendments will allow the president to become an arbiter in defining behavior and ideals in the Russian information space.

In addition, the Russian authorities are directing their efforts to control the behavior of migrants. LDPR member Leonid Slutsky proposed introducing a "Migrant Code" which obliges migrants to integrate into Russian culture and rules. Additionally, a bill is being considered about the need to de-anonymize social media channels with more than 10,000 subscribers, as well as limiting the number of SIM cards for migrants.

Experts believe that such steps are intended to appease the ultranationalist community that supported Yevgeny Prigozhin's uprising. Additionally, these mechanisms will help the RF Ministry of Defense recruit migrants for military service. However, the objective of reducing the threat of Islamic extremism in Russia is not a goal for the initiators of the changes.
