Putin confirmed support for the Syrian transitional government
President of Russia Vladimir Putin stated that he supports efforts to stabilize the situation in Syria and ensure its sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity. He also expressed Russia's readiness to cooperate with the Syrian leadership and strengthen Russian-Syrian relations.
Russia supported Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, but after his overthrow, armed groups led by the Islamist organization 'Hayat Tahrir al-Sham' took power in the country. Now, Syria is governed by a transitional government headed by President al-Sharaa. Russia continues to maintain its military bases in Syria, including the Khmeimim airbase and the naval base in Tartus.
